2008 Philanthropy Roundtable:

A Driving, Personal Force for Change

Monday, August 25, 2008
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Boettcher Concert Hall
Denver Performing Arts Complex

Confirmed Participants:

Moderator: Walter Isaacson

Participants: Diana Aviv, Dr. Lawrence Brilliant, Eli Broad, Caz Matthews, Tim Marquez, Mary Robinson, Rick Shaden, Ted Turner, Jane Wales, Amb. Andrew Young

The 2008 Philanthropy Roundtable is designed as a discussion among ten to twelve participants. A facilitator will lead the Roundtable, encouraging a dynamic, substantive interchange among the participants. Seated in a venue with a capacity for 2,200 persons, the audience for the Philanthropy Roundtable will include individuals with a particular interest in the subject of philanthropy as a driving, personal force for change in the nation and world today.

Roundtable Focus

Wealthy private citizens are increasingly seizing the reins and unilaterally attacking local and global issues via direct, engaged philanthropy. Similarly-motivated, corporations are increasingly challenging their clients and their employees to engage in coordinated, widely-publicized philanthropic campaigns. In this context, topics for the Philanthropy Roundtable may include:

  1. Boundary-less Impact: When can philanthropy cut through bureaucracy and be a driving, personal force for change?
  2. Competition: What competes with an individual’s interest in philanthropy? Retirement planning, intergenerational wealth transfer, or simply more consumption? How do some individuals overcome these competing forces?
  3. Collaboration: Could philanthropic expansion degrade into philanthropic proliferation? How can philanthropic-minded individuals and corporations unilaterally innovate and energize, while also collaborate?
  4. Values Transfer: In what ways does philanthropy help a family to transfer a benefactor’s values not just wealth?
  5. For-Profit Solutions: When can investment in for-profit entities be a viable solution for meeting a philanthropic objective?
